Binzel xFume Welding Fume Extraction

Sales Guide

On torch High Vacuum (HV) at source extraction

Benefits
 Control of welding fume at the source.
 Reduction of airborne particles in the workplace.
 Reduces contamination of the workplace (offices, ceilings, racks, and shelving) also
items that may be dispatched to other locations contaminated with harmful dust
particles.
 Improved visibility for the operator, increased service life for welding helmet cover
lenses and PAPR filters.
Limitations
 Capture rates vary depending on weld position, torch angle and machine set up.
 Most videos and high capture rate claims are based on a fillet weld where fume
naturally travels up and into the nozzle.
Vertical up, overhead, and vertical down will result in lower capture rates. How
much once again depends on many variables be it machine set up or the operator to
consistently maintain position and angle of the torch.
 Shielding gas flow can be affected in confined areas where the suction is greater
than the available atmosphere. The torches have a slide mounted on the handle to
reduce suction slightly and alternate suction nozzles are also available.
 If a customer is switching from a high amperage gas cooled torch to an extraction
torch, duty cycle must be considered e.g. the maximum duty cycle of a Binzel Pro36
torch is 300A @ 60% on mixed gas, non-pulse.
It isn’t possible for us to rate a gas cooled torch of any model at 100% due to many
variables including pulse welding. While it is true the flow of air through a fume
extraction torch can assist in cooling it, this is also variable on torch position and
temperature of the material being welded as the radiant heat generated by the arc
and material will have a large effect on the temperature of the air being drawn in.
We can provide liquid cooled xFume torches (Pro501) and a liquid cooled conversion
package of cooler, hoses, and coolant however this may not always be an option for
those running suitcase feeders of long cable lengths back to the power source.

Points to be aware of

 A percentage of welding fume is created by spatter as it travels through the air.
Reducing spatter by correct machine set-up, material preparation and wire choice
will all assist with this, and lower post weld clean up.
 Shielding gas flow be it to low or, to high will affect the extraction process. It is
recommended to have a flowmeter (191.0003 or similar) to check the true flow at
the torch nozzle.
Examples of regulator flowmeters showing 25lpm but less than 10lpm at the nozzle
due to a leak or a faulty flowmeter is not uncommon.
If the shielding gas flow is too high (20lpm +) the flow of gas from the nozzle will
cause the fume to disperse before it can be captured by the torch.
There is also the possibility of the turbulence created by the high flow drawing air
into the weld pool resulting in porosity.
 Welding of oil contaminated materials, heavy duty and other oil or wax based anti-
spatter compounds (including canola oil) will affect filter life as the oily residue can
cause dust to bind together making filter cleaning extremely hard.
 Where possible, ceramic spray (i.e. 192.0228.1) or water based anti-spatter
(192.0238.1, 192.0240.1 or 192.0315.1) should be used sparingly.

Extraction torches TIG

xFume TIG xFUME® TIG (binzel-abicor.com)
While TIG welding doesn’t create the levels of fume associated with MIG welding it is still extremely
important that the emissions are controlled, particularly stainless steel as chromium burns off as a
gas that may be invisible to the eye but is extremely dangerous.
 Available in 150A gas cooled and 260A liquid cooled in 4m & 8m
 Limited control options available
 Flex head model due late 2025

Low Vacuum (LV) Hood systems

Benefits
 Can be used with MIG, TIG and stick welding.
 No change of existing torch.
 Arm lengths up to 4m allow for movement of the hood around the work area.
 Relatively low-cost option

Limitations
 At its most effective when used up to 400mm directly above the point welding is taking
place.
 Needs to be moved as the point of welding is moved.
 Fume capture will be affected by airflow through the work area created by drafts of fans etc.
This can be improved by placid the hood nearer the work piece if it is possible and safe to do
so.
 Systems with non-cleanable filters, small capacity filters or those that are not available with
a prefilter may not be a viable option for heavier applications.
 As with any filter be it for on torch, hood or PAPR helmets, filter life will be affected
capturing fumes from the welding of materials contaminated with oil.
Binzel Hood extraction system
